Cooper Sporting Classic - Remington 700™ Lightweight Hand Layup Stocks

Cooper Firearms of Montana builds some of the finest semi-custom and custom rifles in the USA, all with their own hand-fitted stocks. We are now making certain models available in limited production runs in handmade wood and fiberglass / kevlar / carbon fiber layup construction.

The synthetic version features a hand laid fiberglass shell with Kevlar and carbon fiber reinforcement in high stress areas, resulting in an extremely strong yet lightweight riflestock for your classic builds.

They feature molded-in aluminum action screw pillars, a very appropriate 1” Pachmayr Old English Decelerator butt pad, and a 13-3/4” length of pull. A more vertical pistol-style grip, sculptured forend and deep reliefs behind the grip provide excellent comfort, trigger control and fast handling.

Custom gunsmiths will love the precision inletting - it is cut for hinged floorplate bottom metal and sporter barrel contour allows for an exceptionally strong stock while maintaining a low 30-31oz weight. The inlet itself is a very tight stock-to-metal fit as you'd expect in a custom Cooper rifle. Since the fit is so precise on my test rifle(s), my guess is some folks will be doing a bit of fitting for aftermarket triggers, etc..

Standard factory R700 sporters (.308 / .30-06, etc.) will drop in and barrels will float out of the box. Magnum sporters (.300 SAUM, .300 Win, etc) may require a bit of sanding for the barrel to float (e.g. paint removal) but they too drop right in.

THESE STOCKS ARE NOT DROP-INS AND ARE DESIGNED BE EPOXY BEDDED IN THE RECOIL LUG AREA. DO NOT FIRE BEFORE BEDDING. When bedding push the reciever as far forward as you can so the screw holes and ejection port lines up and tighten until the epoxy sets.

Stocky's Take: The inletting is what I'd expect from a true custom build - tight. For this reason gunsmiths are going to love them. 

They feature the modern design tweaks to improve comfort and control (more vertical grip) but unlike some others that try to accommodate heavy barrels on a sporter, Cooper Classics are styled correctly for sporter barrels only.
